What is the Door Supervisor Top Up Course?

 

The Door Supervisor Top Up Course is now mandatory for SIA licence renewal. This course is specifically designed for existing SIA door supervisor licence holders who are looking to renew their badges. The aim of the course is to provide door supervisors with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties safely and effectively.

 

This short top up course covers a range of topics, including emergency procedures, communication skills, and conflict management. It is an upskilling course and from 1st October 2021, it has become a mandatory requirement.

The course covers three units:

 

  • Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in The Private Security Industry
  • Principles of Using Equipment as a Door Supervisor in The Private Security Industry
  • Application of Physical Intervention Skills in The Private Security Industry

How Long is the Door Supervisor Top Up Course and What are the Entry Requirements?


The course is delivered over two full days, with class timings from 9 am to 6:45 pm. To be eligible for the course, candidates must meet the following entry requirements:

 

  • Must be aged 18 and over.
  • Must have sufficient reading, writing, speaking, and listening language skills to communicate clearly and effectively.

Do I need to have a First Aid Certificate for the Door Supervisor Top Up Course?


It is an SIA requirement that each learner is sufficiently qualified in First Aid. This course includes an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification, which meets this requirement.

Assessment


How is the Door Supervisor Top Up Course Assessed?

 

The Door Supervisor Top Up Course is assessed through a combination of multiple-choice exams and practical assessments. There are three units in the course, each with its own assessment method. The pass mark for the exams is 70% for Unit 1 and 2, and 80% for Unit 3. Practical assessments include observation of communication device use and physical intervention skills. The duration of the exams and practical assessments vary between 10 to 45 minutes per unit.

What Will I Receive After Successful Completion?

 

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive a Highfield Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Top-Up). The qualification is awarded by Highfield Qualifications and sits on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). This qualification is supported by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), which regulates the private security industry. Successful candidates can then apply to renew their SIA Door Supervisor Licence.

The Door Supervisor Top-Up qualification is valid for three years. After this period, candidates will need to undertake a refresher course and pass the necessary assessments to renew their SIA Door Supervisor License.
