The aim of the course is to provide Security Guard with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties safely and effectively.
This short top-up course covers a range of topics, including dynamic risk assessment and minimising risks to personal safety. It is an upskilling course and from 1st October 2021, it has become a mandatory requirement.
Upon successful completion, you can apply to renew your front-line SIA Security Guard licence. With a valid Security Guard licence, you can work in variety of places, such as commercial buildings, office receptions, construction sites, and shopping centres.

The course covers two units:
- Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in The Private Security Industry
- Principles of Minimising Personal Risk for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry

How Long is the Security Guard Top-Up Course and What are the Entry Requirements?
The course is delivered over one full day, with class timings from 9 am to 6:30 pm. To be eligible for the course, candidates must meet the following entry requirements:
- Must be aged 18 and over.
- Must have sufficient reading, writing, speaking, and listening language skills to communicate clearly and effectively.
First Aid Requirement:
Do I need to have a First Aid Certificate for the Security Guard Top-Up Course?
It is an SIA requirement that each learner is sufficiently qualified in First Aid. This course includes an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification, which meets this requirement.
Assessment
How is the Security Guard Top-Up Course Assessed?
The Security Guard Top Up Course is assessed through multiple-choice exams. There are two units in the course. The pass mark for the exams is 70% for both modules.

What Will I Receive After Successful Completion?
Upon successful completion of the Security Guard Top-Up Course, learners will receive a Highfield Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Top Up) (Scotland).
This qualification is recognized and supported by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Successful candidates can then apply for an SIA Security Guard Licence, enabling them to work as qualified Security Guard throughout the United Kingdom.
